Day care surgery include those surgical procedures which can be done on an outpatient basis which means that an overnight hospital stay can be avoided. The advantages of a day care admission are:
- Reduced time spent at the hospital
- Less disturbance in daily activities
- Return to familiar environment for recovery.
On the day of surgery, some things to remember:
- Leave all valuables at home (ex. Watch, jewellery, keys etc.)
- Take a good shower before coming to the hospital
- Wear comfortable clothing
- Remove all make-up and nail polish
- For procedures which will enable the patient to go home directly post operatively, ensure that there is a relative or a friend who can assist with getting home after.
- Carry all medical records
- Share all your information with the nurse (including allergies)
